Federal Gas Tax Fund Investments Support Local Infrastructure

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) Friday, August 12, 2016 – The Government of Canada is committed to providing Canadian families with modern and efficient infrastructure that have a positive impact on their lives. By making smart investments in local infrastructure, we can build roads, transit and water systems that make a difference in our communities.

Today, Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, announced funding for Sault Ste. Marie and Prince Township as part of the bi-annual transfer to municipalities through the federal Gas Tax Fund (FGT).

The City of Sault Ste. Marie will receive $4,569,051, and Prince Township, $62,691, both an increase from the amounts received the previous two years.

“Public investments in areas like infrastructure are crucial to drive economic growth and strengthen the middle class. Through the federal Gas Tax Fund the Government of Canada is providing communities in the riding of Sault Ste. Marie with flexible, predictable funding to address their biggest priorities, across a range of needs. Through our infrastructure investments we will help form the foundation of a more inclusive society – one that delivers stronger growth and a better quality of life for the middle class and those working hard to join it,” stated MP Terry Sheehan.

At more than $2 billion each year, the federal Gas Tax Fund provides predictable, long-term funding to help Canadian municipalities build and revitalize public infrastructure. The Government of Canada is proud to help municipalities build the Canada of the 21st century and ensure a high quality of life for generations to come.

“The Federal Gas Tax Fund is a valuable program that has helped the City of Sault Ste. Marie to build and revitalize important infrastructure. We greatly appreciate the Government of Canada’s on-going support through the fund,” said Mayor of Sault Ste. Marie, Christian Provenzano.
