FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) Thursday, September 1, 2016 – The Government of Canada values the contribution teachers and early childhood educators in Sault Ste. Marie make to ensuring young people have the skills they need to join a strong middle class.
“With back to school on the horizon, we’re implementing a new school supply tax credit for teachers and early childhood educators. The Government of Canada recognizes that teachers across the country are digging into their own pockets to create the best possible learning environment for their students and we want to help offset these personal costs,” said Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie.
Introduced in 2016, the Eligible Educator School Supply Tax Credit will help offset personal costs incurred by teachers and early childhood educators, allowing those affected to claim a 15% refundable tax credit on up to $1,000 worth of school supplies each year.
Eligible educators, regardless of their income level, who purchase educational materials, will qualify for a refund of up to $150 each year. This new tax measure reflects the Government of Canada’s commitment to invest in our educators and bring real change to Canadians.
“Educators in Sault Ste. Marie and across the country have the same goal – they want to provide our children and grandchildren with the best possible education so that they become contributing members of society. Today we provide a tax credit that will help off-set the important investments they make in their classroom every day,” concluded Sheehan.
