FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) Friday, December 2, 2016 – Department of Canadian Heritage and Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario – FedNor

The Government of Canada is investing $2,100,000 to assist with renovations to two buildings at Mill Square. The funding will enhance the performance and music education areas of the Algoma Conservatory of Music’s primary facility, and provide technical upgrades to an adjacent building for use by the Conservatory and other presenters in the community.

Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament (Sault Ste. Marie), announced two contributions today. On behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, he announced funding of $2,000,000 from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, and on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedNor, he announced an investment of $100,000 from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

“I’m delighted that today’s announcement will ensure that this important historical building remains a source of community pride and a beautiful venue for cultural events and performances. Furthermore, our investment supports the City of Sault Ste. Marie’s plan to redevelop the downtown site where the building is located, drawing visitors to the area and generating business for area merchants.” —Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament (Sault Ste. Marie)

“We know how important infrastructure is to cultural organizations across the country. That’s why we’re so proud to support the renovation and expansion of the Algoma Conservatory of Music’s facilities. These improvements will ensure that the Conservatory can continue its excellent programming and music education, as well as promote our culture in a modern, professional and accessible environment.”—The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage

“The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of investing in key landmark facilities, such as the Algoma Conservatory of Music, to preserve their rich heritage so that they can continue to be enjoyed by area residents and visitors alike. The renovations announced today will ensure that the heritage building will play an important role in the community.” —The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedNor

The sandstone building, which was built by entrepreneur Francis H. Clergue in 1901 and was home of the former St. Mary’s Paper, is now a focal point in Sault Ste. Marie’s arts community as the new home of the Algoma Conservatory of Music.

“I would like to thank the Government of Canada for investing in our building and for supporting our goals. This will truly establish a cultural centre that will enhance music performance and education in our community for generations to come.” —Guy Traficante, Principal, Algoma Conservatory of Music
