SHEEHAN ANNOUNCES MORE FEDERAL SUPPORT FOR SHINGWAUK RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS CENTRE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) Friday, May 31, 2019 – Today, Member of Parliament, Terry Sheehan, on behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, announced additional federal funding of $169, 500 for Algoma University’s Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre for their Healing and Reconciliation Through Education program. This brings the total federal investment to $429,028 since 2016.

 

”This funding will support the creation of the centrepiece gallery of the Reclaiming Shingwauk Hall exhibition. Housed in the historic Shingwauk Auditorium, this gallery will be the creative and participatory core of the entire project. It will feature a dynamic exhibition space with thematic educational programming tied to art making and storytelling. The SRSC is delighted to see the continued funding of this project, which supports the fulfillment of Chief Shingwauk’s Vision.”

Industry Science and Economic Development’s Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Innovation Fund

$2.5 Million for major upgrades to the Shingwauk Hall at Algoma University (2016).

$10.2 Million for construction of the Anishinabek Discovery Centre, the new home of Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig.
