SHEEHAN MAKES CASE FOR NATIONAL TRADES AND SKILLS STRATEGY
June 13, 2019

Office of Terry Sheehan

Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie

For Immediate Release

June 13th, 2019- Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Yesterday, in Ottawa, MP Terry Sheehan made a persuasive case for the creation of a National Skills, Trades, and Training Strategy. Sault Ste. Marie is in critical need of more skilled workers, and a National Strategy is essential to preparing Saultites and Canadians to step up to the plate.

Terry says Sault Ste. Marie is an excellent example of industry, unions, schools, and community organizations working together to promote trade skills as a great career path.

“I just recently attended a trades night organized by the Algoma District School Board,” Terry said, “and I heard from Jaime McMillan about her experience as a woman in trades. We need to invest in more people like Jaime in the Sault and across Canada if our businesses are going to get the skilled workers they need.”

Terry Sheehan spent several years as an Employment and Training Consultant for the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities, and knows that a National Strategy will help get more young people in the trades.

With his extensive experience in the field, Terry is pleased with his government’s commitment to trades, training, and skills development. In the most recent budget, Skills Canada received $40 million over four years to encourage more young people to consider work in the skilled trades. This comes in addition to the government’s $6 million investment to make skilled trades a “first-choice” career for young people.
