For Immediate Release
July 14, 2020 - Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
Please find below a statement from Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages (FedNor) on the Canada-US border.
“I appreciate and acknowledge the motions and statements from Sault Ste. Marie Council, Prince Township, Garden River First Nation, and Batchewana First Nation which support the federal government’s restrictions on the Canada-US border. Our government is using every tool in the toolbox to keep Canadians safe, and limiting travel across the border is an important part of our response to the pandemic.
While the measures on the Canada-US border are ultimately up to the federal government, input from the community has an impact. I’ve been hearing from constituents all across the riding about the need for travel restrictions between Canada and the US. At the same time, we know how important it is to protect the new NAFTA and the $2 billion worth of trade that goes across our border every day. As a former city councillor, I was very pleased to see local politicians standing up for the people they represent. I will be sharing this feedback with my colleagues, and I promise to always fight for what’s best for our communities.”
