For Immediate Release

December 17, 2020

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

The holidays look much different this year, as Canadians have explored new ways to celebrate together, while apart.

As you continue to wrap up preparations for the holiday season next week, now is the time to come together to thank and support our local businesses and organizations.

While following our local public health guidelines, shopping and eating locally, particularly during the holiday season, is one way in which you can help.

Since this crisis began, our Government has been there to provide support for Canadians, protect jobs, and keep businesses afloat during these challenging times.

    • we’ve extended the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy through summer 2021 and are proposing to increase the subsidy rate back to 75%;
    • we’ve expanded the Canada Emergency Business Account and introduced the new Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy; and,
    • we’ve provided direct support to local businesses who may not be eligible for these programs through the Regional Relief and Recovery Fund, and are proposing to provide an additional $500 million to the fund.The strength or weakness of Canada’s economic recovery affects us all, and we all have a role to play in determining the path ahead.  By modifying our celebrations this year, we can look ahead to a return to our usual traditions in 2021.

Local business, their owners, and their workers are at the heart of our communities. They are our neighbours and friends.  This holiday season consider ordering take out from our fantastic local restaurants.  Or purchase gift cards for shops and restaurants to show them support.  Our local business owners have shown incredible resilience this year.  Join me and #supportlocal as we celebrate the holiday season.

Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament, Sault Ste. Marie and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Economic Development (FedNor) and Official Languages

Now, more than ever, it is important to support local business. The businesses that stepped up for our community during the pandemic whether they were fully or partially open, or completely closed. Now during this holiday season, they are taking every precaution to keep you safe when visiting their establishments. The phrase “Buy Local or Say Goodbye Local” does not ring more true than this holiday season. Every dollar spent in a local business means that charities, sports teams, food banks, women’s shelter and places like ARCH can benefit from business’ support and giving. Every dollar spent locally means $7-$11 of economic benefit is felt in the community and that’s why we support #supportlocal and shop local promoters like www.algomamarketplace.com.
