Investing $159,500 in F.J. Davey Long-Term Care Home to protect against COVID-19

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, June 30, 2021—Canadians everywhere are feeling the impact of COVID-19, on their families, their livelihoods and their way of life. Together, the governments of Canada and Ontario are working to reduce the impact of the pandemic, ensure health and safety, rebuild businesses, and promote job creation, growth and investment.

Communities across Canada are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic and need immediate assistance to ensure their public infrastructure is safe and reliable.

That is why both levels of government have been taking decisive action to support families, businesses and communities, and continue to look ahead to see what more can be done in these unprecedented times.

The Governments of Canada and Ontario are providing the F. J. Davey Home, a long-term care facility in Sault Ste. Marie, with funding through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream.

The Government of Canada is investing $127,600 towards this project through the COVID-19 Resilience Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The Government of Ontario is contributing $31,900.

This project will install 2 new HVAC systems to ensure a reliable source of heat and cooling, improved air filtration, and optimize energy efficiency.

Recently, the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities; the Honourable Deb Schulte, Federal Minister of Seniors; the Honourable Laurie Scott, Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure; and the Honourable Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, Ontario’s Minister of Long-Term Care, announced over $99.4 million in 95 projects to improve long-term care homes across Ontario.

The majority of funding will make important upgrades and improvements to HVAC systems as well as sprinkler and ventilation systems in long-term care homes across Ontario. All residents living in long-term care facilities deserve to live in safe, modern spaces, and these investments will improve the safety of these homes for both residents and long-term care workers.

Quotes

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on Canada’s most vulnerable populations. As we continue to battle this crisis, upgrading ventilation systems to ensure cleaner air in Ontario’s long-term care homes will be critical to the health and safety of residents and the people that care for them. The Government of Canada is investing 80 cents on every dollar invested in these important projects across the province. Canada’s infrastructure plan invests in thousands of projects, creates jobs across the country, and builds cleaner, more inclusive communities.”

The Honourable Catherine McKenna, Federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

“Investing in the ventilation systems of our long-term care homes is critical in supporting this vulnerable population.  Recognizing the urgency needed in responding to issues the pandemic presented, Infrastructure Canada created the COVID-19 Resilience Funding Stream to provide added flexibility to fund quick-start, short-term projects that might not otherwise be eligible under the existing funding streams.”

Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Economic Development (FedNor)

“The Ontario government is committed to supporting the health, well-being and care of Ontario’s seniors.  That is why we’re contributing to critical services that will keep our long-term care homes up to date with critical equipment, such as HVAC systems, that provide residents with cleaner air and a more efficient heating and cooling system.  By investing in this infrastructure, we’re ensuring residents and frontline workers at FJ Davey Home are living and working in a safer environment.”

Ross Romano, Member of Provincial Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie and Minister of Government and Consumer Services

The FJ Davey Home is fortunate to be a recipient of these much-needed resources! Being able to upgrade the ventilation and heating system of our home is critical to ensuring a safe and comfortable living environment for those who have entrusted themselves to our care, both now and into the future.

Wayne Lion, Board Chair, F.J Davey Home
