SHEEHAN ANNOUNCES $100,000 FOR GARDEN RIVER FIRST NATION

The Government of Canada is investing $100,000 to enable the Garden River First Nation to assist with the rehabilitation of Ojibway Park and Laughing Water Beach, located on the shores of Lake George. Originally set aside to allow Garden River First Nation members to gather traditional medicines during the early 1950s, the site was opened to the general public in 1962, and today it offers a pristine and calming cultural experience to residents and visitors alike.

Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150) investment. Specifically, the FedNor funding will enable the community to rehabilitate the existing shower house and pavilion, and expand the boardwalk to improve accessibility and connect to neighbouring nature trails.

“The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of investing in local infrastructure to help build stronger, more inclusive communities. By supporting the rehabilitation of community assets, such as Garden River First Nation’s Ojibway Park, we are contributing to the long-term growth and prosperity of our rural and Indigenous communities.”THE HONOURABLE NAVDEEP BAINSMinister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor

“The Ojibway Park is an integral part of the fabric of the community and helps bring people together to share healthy living and cultural experiences. I am very pleased that today’s announcement will help enhance the quality of life for members of the Garden River First Nation, while contributing to the celebration of Canada’s Confederation.”

“We are thrilled that the Government of Canada, through FedNor, is helping us revitalize our Ojibway Park and Laughing Water Beach asset. The facility was certainly in need of some enhancements and now we will ensure it continues to serve its role as an important community gathering place.”
