FUNDING TO SUPPORT IMPORTANT HISTORICAL RECORDS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) Friday, June 7, 2019 – Today, Member of Parliament, Terry Sheehan, on behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, announced federal funding of $269,380 for the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library Archives project.

Through Heritage Canada, the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund (CCSF) supports renovation and construction projects, the acquisition of specialized equipment and feasibility studies related to cultural spaces. As the steward of historical data for Sault Ste. Marie and the District of Algoma, the Public Library is building a state-of-the-art facility for the care and storage of significant archives, including collections designated as Cultural Property by the Federal Government due to their significance in Canadian history.

“I want to recognize the men and women who have worked tirelessly to ensure the preservation of our local historical data and artifacts. These historical records document the specific achievements and contributions of the Sault, the District of Algoma and Northern Ontario region, to the building of Canada as we know it today.”

TERRY SHEEHAN

Member of Parliament Sault Ste. Marie

“We at the Library are very excited about this announcement. One of our many roles as a public library is to be custodians of our community’s local history through the public archives. This autumn we will be moving our archival material to the soon to be opened North Branch, which has been specially prepared for the preservation of documents. The funding provided to the Library through the Ministry of Heritage will enable us to increase the new archive’s capacity and enable us to provide optimal preservation. An archive is important to a community because it helps the community understand its roots. It is a living history which we can learn from. It provides us better understanding of our here and now. It is a way for us to fondly and/or respectively look back at what has come before.”

MATTHEW MACDONALD,

Acting CEO, Sault Ste. Marie Public Library
