Feb. 13, 2023

FedNor invests over $3.1 million in innovation, tourism, and agri-food in the Sault Ste. Marie area

Jan. 19, 2023  Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, and the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced new FedNor investments of $3,172,320 in support of five projects in the Sault Ste. Marie area. The funding will support innovation and technology, education, and the agri-food sector while also creating and maintain jobs, and enabling future growth opportunities.

 

Of the total FedNor investment, $1,846,662 will enable the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre’s Rural Agri-Innovation Network to continue its Sustainable New Agri-Food Products & Productivity program (SNAPP) for another three-year period, $533,208 will go to Sault College to support a new Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics degree program, and $500,000 will assist the City of Sault Ste. Marie construct a connecting section of the waterfront boardwalk, joining the two sections. Destination Northern Ontario will also receive $300,000 to modernize and expand its suite of Tourism Excellence North training solutions, and Executive Aviation Fuels Ltd. will receive a repayable contribution of $92,450 to invest in an electric ground power unit and associated infrastructure upgrades.

Governments of Canada and Ontario invest in Huron Central Railway in Northern Ontario

 

Jan. 10, 2023 The federal Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour, Terry Sheehan, and federal Minister of Transport, the Honourable Omar Alghabra, announced an investment of up to $10.5 million under the National Trade Corridors Fund to the Huron Central Railway Inc. for an infrastructure investment in Northern Ontario. The Member of Provincial Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, Ross Romano, announced additional funding of up to $10.5 million from the Government of Ontario. Combined with contributions from Huron Central Railway Inc., the total investment in the project is $31.5 million.

MP Terry Sheehan and Minister Ahmed Hussen announce major funding for local housing projects

Jan. 9, 2023 The first project will build more housing for veterans and will be operated by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25. It aims to replace the existing building with a nine-storey accessible tower, which will encompass 107 units, of which more than 30 percent will be affordable. The building will have amenities for the tenants, their families, and the community, including a restaurant, meeting rooms, a hall, and a gathering place. This project received $32.1 million in federal funding through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund (NHCF) and $1.9 million from Veteran's Housing Ontario Inc.

The second portfolio of projects will be owned and operated by Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services (OAHS), with nine projects serving communities across Ontario, creating 276 affordable units to support Indigenous peoples. Some projects will support Indigenous people who are experiencing or at risk of chronic homelessness, while others will support at-risk Indigenous youth and women and their children. This portfolio of projects will receive nearly $87 million in federal funding through the NHCF. Approximately $3.7 million has also been committed by the federal government and the Province of Ontario through the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative (OPHI) bilateral agreement to build 45 units in Sault Ste. Marie and London, as well as $7.2 million from OAHS in the form of land and cash equity.

Construction of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 project is expected to be completed by December 2023, while construction of the OAHS portfolio of projects is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

MP TERRY SHEEHAN ANNOUNCES $14.6 MILLION FOR BATCHEWANA FIRST NATION WATER TREATMENT PLANT

September 13, 2022 Funding of $14.6 million to Batchewana First Nation for the feasibility, design, and construction of the new water treatment plant will serve the community of Goulais Mission and 10 Point-of-Entry water systems for the Obajiwan community.

This new water treatment plant will be a new centre that will exceed the needs of providing clean and treated water to homes across Goulais Mission. This is the federal government’s commitment to ensure each Indigenous community has access to clean and safe drinking water. The new water treatment plant will ensure, for decades to come, access to clean water that is safe to consume.

FEDNOR INVESTS OVER $950,000 TO GROW AND DIVERSIFY THE AGRI-FOOD SECTOR IN ALGOMA

August 5, 2022 Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour, announced a FedNor investment of $951,530 in two projects designed to fuel growth and diversification in the agri-food sector of Northern Ontario. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor.

The Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN), a division of the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC), will receive a non-repayable contribution of $721,530 to create and deliver a Responsive Advancement for Meat Processing (RAMP) program that would provide productivity assessments and management training to abattoirs and meat plants throughout Northern Ontario. The goal of the project is to expand and diversify the meat supply chain, critical to the agri-food sector in the region in response to the continuing high demand from consumers and farmers for locally-sourced meat products. As a direct result of this investment, RAIN expects to create 10 full-time jobs and to help maintain 35 more.

As part of the announcement, Penokean Hills Co-operative (PHC), will also receive $230,000 to undertake infrastructure expansion aimed at improving operational efficiency and capacity at the feed yard. The improvements achieved through this project will allow PHC to increase the growth and daily gains of the cattle, and to increase the overall number of finished cattle in the value chain. This project is anticipated to create one permanent and two temporary jobs while also increasing revenue for local stock farmers and local crop farmers providing feed.

July 29, 2022 Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour, announced a FedNor investment of $168,802 in SK Group Inc, a leading promotional branding solutions company in Northern Ontario, to expand its operations, support new job creation, and grow the region’s economy.  Thanks to funding provided through FedNor’s Jobs and Growth Fund (JGF), SK Group Inc, a woman-owned and led branding solutions company, will purchase and install a state-of-the-art direct to garment machine (DTG), expand its facility to accommodate the new equipment, and hire and train staff to operate the DTG.

GOVERNMENT OF CANADA HIGHLIGHTS NEARLY $15.5 MILLION IN FUNDING TO BRING HIGH-SPEED INTERNET ACCESS TO 3,659 HOUSEHOLDS IN ONTARIO

Households in rural communities to benefit from the funding to increase access to high-speed Internet

  • $2,590,000 for Bell Canada to improve access for 1,200 households in the communities of Batchawana Bay, Northland Station, Searchmont, Glendale, Floeyet, Cartier, Ella Lake, Island Lake, and Trout Lake.

 

This funding is part of a collaboration between Ontario and Canada. On July 29, 2021, the governments announced their partnership to support large-scale, fibre-based projects that will provide high-speed Internet access to more than 280,000 rural and remote households across the province. This historic agreement was made possible by a joint federal-provincial investment totalling more than $1.2 billion.

April 22, 2022 Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT INVESTS IN TOOLS FOR EVIDENCE-BASED DECISIONS IN PRINCE TOWNSHIP

March 9, 2022 Prince Township received a grant of $33,680 to update the Municipal Asset Management Program (MAMP).  The last plan was approved in 2015. The biggest advantage to a new Asset Management Plan in Prince would be the ability to link the Township's Asset Register to GIS mapping information from Sault Ste. Marie's Innovation Centre. This will allow our infrastructure to be visible on the GIS system and enable more efficient tracking and management of municipal assets.

MP TERRY SHEEHAN ANNOUNCES FUNDING IN SUPPORT OF LOCAL FOOD ACCESS PROJECTS

(1) St. Vincent Place Sault Ste. Marie, established in 2003, applied for funding in support of its effort to improve its capacity to provide fresh, nutritious food. St. Vincent Place is focused on providing outreach and referral services to help those who require access to shelter, food, and other basic needs. This organization applied for funding to purchase and install a walk-in cooler and a walk-in freezer and was awarded $35,458 for that purpose.

(2) Garden River First Nation’s Food House (Ketegaunzeebee Miijim Gaamig) applied to the Ministry of Agriculture requesting funding for two refrigerators, a custom walk-in freezer, associated installation costs for the walk-in freezer, and numerous other costs relating to the greenhouse, raised garden beds, and kitchen supplies. The Food House was awarded $88,216 toward that project.

(3) Salvation Army Sault Ste. Marie requested funding for and received $24,000 for its Homeless Feeding Program. Specifically, this agency needed funding for new kitchen appliances (commercial refrigerator, electrical stove/hoods, countertop and sinks) and the associated installation costs, as well as kitchen equipment (pots, utensils, blender, etc.).

INVESTING OVER $7 MILLION IN AREA SCHOOLS TO PROTECT AGAINST COVID-19

August 3, 2021 Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Economic Development (FedNor), and Ross Romano, MPP Sault Ste. Marie, announced joint funding for Algoma District School Board and the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board to fund infrastructure improvements for area schools, in order to protect students and staff from COVID-19.

The Government of Canada is investing $5,692,000 towards these projects through the COVID-19 Resilience stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The Government of Ontario is contributing $1,423,000 to the projects.

SAULT STE. MARIE AIRPORT CORPORATION IS RECEIVING MORE THAN $2.15M FROM FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO MAINTAIN REGIONAL CONNECTIVITY AND JOBS

This non-repayable contribution will help mitigate the financial pressures brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic by supporting the operations of the Sault Ste. Marie airport for a one-year period. The project is expected to help maintain 13 local jobs.  Regional air transportation is key to the economic development of communities and businesses right across Canada. It is essential to connecting Canadians living in rural and remote communities to urban centres, delivering Canadian goods to the global market and welcoming international visitors to all parts of the country, when it is safe to do so.

ALGOMA STEEL INC. RECEIVES FUNDING TO RETROFIT THEIR OPERATIONS AND PHASE OUT COAL-FIRED STEELMAKING PROCESSES 

 

July 5, 2021

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was in Sault Ste. Marie ON July 5th, 2021 and announced that Algoma Steel Inc. will receive up to $420 million to retrofit their operations and phase out coal-fired steelmaking processes at their facility in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

This funding will enable the company to purchase state-of-the-art equipment to support its transition to Electric-Arc Furnace production. This electricity-based process is expected to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by more than 3 million metric tonnes per year by 2030, making a meaningful contribution to achieving Canada’s climate goals. This is equivalent to taking more than 900,000 passenger vehicles off the road – almost the number of passenger vehicles in Toronto.

The investment will create 500 well-paying jobs, through the project’s construction phase and subcontracting, and will create over 600 new co-op placements for students. Additionally, 75 employees at Algoma will be trained for high-skilled jobs in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

June 30, 2021 The Governments of Canada and Ontario are providing the F. J. Davey Home, a long-term care facility in Sault Ste. Marie, with funding through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream.  The Government of Canada is investing $127,600 towards this project through the COVID-19 Resilience Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The Government of Ontario is contributing $31,900.  This project will install 2 new HVAC systems to ensure a reliable source of heat and cooling, improved air filtration, and optimize energy efficiency.

June 25, 2021 Through the Rapid Response Stream of the Universal Broadband Fund (UBF), the Government of Canada is taking immediate action to get Canadians connected to the high-speed Internet they need. 

Prince Township & Area (Carpin Beach, Gros Cap, Pointe Louise) will benefit from a $157,635 contribution from the Government of Canada, for LeepFrog Telecom to improve the broadband connectivity to 403 households in the region of Prince Township, using fixed wireless last mile and fibre core network technologies, for a total project cost of $210,730.

Marie.  Onsite child and family care are provided by Waabinong Head Start and Family Resource Centre.

SAULT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (EDC) MOUNTAIN BIKING TRAILS

A FedNor investment of $500,000 was announced by Parliamentary Secretary and Member of Parliament Terry Sheehan to support the Sault Ste. Marie EDC’s efforts to construct up to 75 kilometres of high quality, multi-use mountain bike trails, benefitting not only tourists but also the local economy.

BUSHPLANE MUSEUM RENOVATION

 

The Bushplane Museum will receive $20,772 in support for upgrades. Mr. Sheehan made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

The funding, provided through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, will go toward improvements to the audiovisual and display equipment for the Centre’s Wings Over the North Theatre and the Wildlife Theatre.

The upgrades ensure that the Centre can continue to welcome and educate visitors about the region’s important aviation and firefighting history and heritage.

The Algoma Fall Festival will receive $47,300 for 2020-2021 and a further $43,000 in 2021-2022 seasons for the Algoma Fall Festival. The funding is provided through the Celebrate Canada program, the Local Festivals component of the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage Program, and the Canada Arts Presentation Fund. Since 1972, the Algoma Arts Festival Association has organized the annual Fall Festival in Sault Ste. Marie, bringing various exciting visual and performing artists to the Sault. $90,300

HELIENE INC.

A FedNor investment of more than $1.36 million to assist Heliene Inc., a solar panel manufacturer in Sault Ste. Marie with two clean technology projects allowing them to capitalize on innovation to grow and create jobs. $1.36 million

SAULT STE. MARIE INNOVATION CENTRE (SSMIC)

Of the total, the SSMIC will receive $700,000 to support the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Network in Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma region.

The FedNor investment of $38,000 will enable Acorn Information Solutions, a division of the SSMIC to document its business model to share best practices with other communities across Northern Ontario.

The remaining $31,500 will assist the SSMIC’s Acorn Information Solutions in hiring a youth intern to enhance the Vulnerable Person’s Registry through software updates.

Funding to develop two new tourism products. A contribution of $160,000 will be used to develop a world-class snowmobile region along Highway 11 North between Hearst and Temiskaming Shores, including the City of Timmins. The remaining $70,000 will support the development of a series of interactive itineraries for smart phone and tablet users that highlight the region’s francophone culture and experiential tourism opportunities. $230,000

BATCHEWANA FIRST NATION

Funding road improvements in the Batchewana First Nation of Ojibways. The Government of Canada is investing more than $1.7 million through the Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan. The Government of Ontario is contributing more than $438,000 and the Batchewana First Nation of Ojibways is providing more than $1.4 million towards this project. $1.7 million

SAULT AIRPORT DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

Government of Canada investment will enable the corporation to upgrade and extend services at its industrial park. $1.8 million

Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund investment of more than $12.9 million to help the Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig build the new Anishinabek Discovery Centre. $13.5 million
