FedNor invests over $3.1 million in innovation, tourism, and agri-food in the Sault Ste. Marie area
Jan. 19, 2023 Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, and the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced new FedNor investments of $3,172,320 in support of five projects in the Sault Ste. Marie area. The funding will support innovation and technology, education, and the agri-food sector while also creating and maintain jobs, and enabling future growth opportunities.
Of the total FedNor investment, $1,846,662 will enable the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre’s Rural Agri-Innovation Network to continue its Sustainable New Agri-Food Products & Productivity program (SNAPP) for another three-year period, $533,208 will go to Sault College to support a new Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics degree program, and $500,000 will assist the City of Sault Ste. Marie construct a connecting section of the waterfront boardwalk, joining the two sections. Destination Northern Ontario will also receive $300,000 to modernize and expand its suite of Tourism Excellence North training solutions, and Executive Aviation Fuels Ltd. will receive a repayable contribution of $92,450 to invest in an electric ground power unit and associated infrastructure upgrades.

Governments of Canada and Ontario invest in Huron Central Railway in Northern Ontario
Jan. 10, 2023 The federal Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour, Terry Sheehan, and federal Minister of Transport, the Honourable Omar Alghabra, announced an investment of up to $10.5 million under the National Trade Corridors Fund to the Huron Central Railway Inc. for an infrastructure investment in Northern Ontario. The Member of Provincial Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, Ross Romano, announced additional funding of up to $10.5 million from the Government of Ontario. Combined with contributions from Huron Central Railway Inc., the total investment in the project is $31.5 million. |

MP Terry Sheehan and Minister Ahmed Hussen announce major funding for local housing projects
Jan. 9, 2023 The first project will build more housing for veterans and will be operated by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25. It aims to replace the existing building with a nine-storey accessible tower, which will encompass 107 units, of which more than 30 percent will be affordable. The building will have amenities for the tenants, their families, and the community, including a restaurant, meeting rooms, a hall, and a gathering place. This project received $32.1 million in federal funding through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund (NHCF) and $1.9 million from Veteran's Housing Ontario Inc. The second portfolio of projects will be owned and operated by Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services (OAHS), with nine projects serving communities across Ontario, creating 276 affordable units to support Indigenous peoples. Some projects will support Indigenous people who are experiencing or at risk of chronic homelessness, while others will support at-risk Indigenous youth and women and their children. This portfolio of projects will receive nearly $87 million in federal funding through the NHCF. Approximately $3.7 million has also been committed by the federal government and the Province of Ontario through the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative (OPHI) bilateral agreement to build 45 units in Sault Ste. Marie and London, as well as $7.2 million from OAHS in the form of land and cash equity. Construction of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 project is expected to be completed by December 2023, while construction of the OAHS portfolio of projects is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

September 13, 2022 Funding of $14.6 million to Batchewana First Nation for the feasibility, design, and construction of the new water treatment plant will serve the community of Goulais Mission and 10 Point-of-Entry water systems for the Obajiwan community. This new water treatment plant will be a new centre that will exceed the needs of providing clean and treated water to homes across Goulais Mission. This is the federal government’s commitment to ensure each Indigenous community has access to clean and safe drinking water. FEDNOR INVESTS OVER $950,000 TO GROW AND DIVERSIFY THE AGRI-FOOD SECTOR IN ALGOMA
August 5, 2022 Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour, announced a FedNor investment of $951,530 in two projects designed to fuel growth and diversification in the agri-food sector of Northern Ontario. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor.
The Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN), a division of the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC), will receive a non-repayable contribution of $721,530 to create and deliver a Responsive Advancement for Meat Processing (RAMP) program that would provide productivity assessments and management training to abattoirs and meat plants throughout Northern Ontario. The goal of the project is to expand and diversify the meat supply chain, critical to the agri-food sector in the region in response to the continuing high demand from consumers and farmers for locally-sourced meat products. As a direct result of this investment, RAIN expects to create 10 full-time jobs and to help maintain 35 more. As part of the announcement, Penokean Hills Co-operative (PHC), will also receive $230,000 to undertake infrastructure expansion aimed at improving operational efficiency and capacity at the feed yard. The improvements achieved through this project will allow PHC to increase the growth and daily gains of the cattle, and to increase the overall number of finished cattle in the value chain. This project is anticipated to create one permanent and two temporary jobs while also increasing revenue for local stock farmers and local crop farmers providing feed. |

ALGOMA STEEL INC. RECEIVES FUNDING TO RETROFIT THEIR OPERATIONS AND PHASE OUT COAL-FIRED STEELMAKING PROCESSES
July 5, 2021 The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was in Sault Ste. Marie ON July 5th, 2021 and announced that Algoma Steel Inc. will receive up to $420 million to retrofit their operations and phase out coal-fired steelmaking processes at their facility in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. This funding will enable the company to purchase state-of-the-art equipment to support its transition to Electric-Arc Furnace production. This electricity-based process is expected to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by more than 3 million metric tonnes per year by 2030, making a meaningful contribution to achieving Canada’s climate goals. This is equivalent to taking more than 900,000 passenger vehicles off the road – almost the number of passenger vehicles in Toronto. The investment will create 500 well-paying jobs, through the project’s construction phase and subcontracting, and will create over 600 new co-op placements for students. Additionally, 75 employees at Algoma will be trained for high-skilled jobs in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. |

BUSHPLANE MUSEUM RENOVATION
The Bushplane Museum will receive $20,772 in support for upgrades. Mr. Sheehan made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage. The funding, provided through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, will go toward improvements to the audiovisual and display equipment for the Centre’s Wings Over the North Theatre and the Wildlife Theatre. The upgrades ensure that the Centre can continue to welcome and educate visitors about the region’s important aviation and firefighting history and heritage. |

The Algoma Fall Festival will receive $47,300 for 2020-2021 and a further $43,000 in 2021-2022 seasons for the Algoma Fall Festival. The funding is provided through the Celebrate Canada program, the Local Festivals component of the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage Program, and the Canada Arts Presentation Fund. Since 1972, the Algoma Arts Festival Association has organized the annual Fall Festival in Sault Ste. Marie, bringing various exciting visual and performing artists to the Sault. | $90,300 |

Of the total, the SSMIC will receive $700,000 to support the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Network in Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma region.
The FedNor investment of $38,000 will enable Acorn Information Solutions, a division of the SSMIC to document its business model to share best practices with other communities across Northern Ontario. The remaining $31,500 will assist the SSMIC’s Acorn Information Solutions in hiring a youth intern to enhance the Vulnerable Person’s Registry through software updates. |

A contribution of $160,000 will be used to develop a world-class snowmobile region along Highway 11 North between Hearst and Temiskaming Shores, including the City of Timmins.
