MP Sheehan’s statement on the situation in Israel and Gaza.
November 9, 2023

In recent weeks, I have spoken with representatives of both the Jewish and Muslim communities in Sault Ste. Marie to hear how the violence in Israel and Gaza have been affecting people there, and here at home. I will work with federal, provincial, and local officials to ensure the safety of all and combat hate crimes.

Our government has been working hard to ensure the safety and security of Canadians abroad. We were the first country to get people out of the West Bank, and as of today, 16 flights have brought more than 1,500 people from the region to safety.

And we have been clear from the beginning - we condemn the brutal terrorist attack on Israeli civilians by Hamas. Hamas does nothing for the Palestinian people but brings more loss and heartache. I join our Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in their calls for a significant pause of hostilities to ensure proper continued humanitarian relief, that all civilians be protected, hostages released, international laws respected. Those wishing to support humanitarian efforts may donate at HumanitarianCoalition.ca, where donations will be matched by the Government of Canada up to $10 million.

I want to confirm my unwavering support to our local Jewish and Muslims communities, and for all those who strive for a peaceful resolution to this conflict.
