Statement on the passing of Bill C-332 in the House of Commons
June 18, 2024

Congratulations to Algoma Steel on the grand opening of the plate mill modernization project. Algoma Steel has been a backbone of Sault Ste. Marie for generations, and I will always be proud to stand up for you, your workers, and your role in our community.

Algoma Steel was emerging out of years of bankruptcy protection that was blamed on the previous Conservative government's inaction on cheap dumped steel. I took action along with our government, and in 2019 we announced 90 million dollars to support this modernization project.

This was at the same time that Donald Trump had imposed 232 tariffs on Canadian steel - which we fought back against with our anti-tariffs, and we won.

By investing in this modernization, we were not just investing in Algoma Steel. By ensuring its long-term viability, we were investing in the workers, in good middle-class union jobs, and the continued success of our region's economy that depends on the steel plant's long term viability.

We will continue to stand up for steel - whether it is through modernization projects like the electric arc furnace, or through fighting against foreign dumping.

Congratulations on your Grand Opening, and I wish nothing but continued success for Algoma Steel and your workers!
