Statement on Trump’s tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum
March 12, 2025

Today, the Government of Canada announced reciprocal tariffs on $29.8 billion dollars worth of goods imported from the United States, in response to 25% tariffs that Trump has unjustifiably put on Canadian-made steel and aluminum today.

At midnight, this response will impact $12.6 billion worth of US-made steel, $3 billion worth of aluminum, and $14 billion worth of other consumer goods.

When Donald Trump imposed arbitrary tariffs in 2018, our government hit back, countering them dollar-for-dollar on steel, aluminum, and a variety of American products. As we did in 2018, we will support workers, businesses, and communities that are affected by these unjust tariffs, with a number of measures already announced last week. Today, Mark Carney reiterated that he is committed to using all revenue raised from our counter-tariffs to provide further supports to those affected.

Today’s announcement is in addition to the $30 billion in reciprocal tariffs that were implemented on March 4, with further identified increases should Trump continue to escalate this dispute.

We know that the best approach to fighting Trump’s unprovoked trade war is the Team Canada approach where we stand united until all tariffs and threats to our sovereignty are ended. Canada - we are strong and free!
